Secure Log In
Ensuring the security of your personal information online is a top priority for us. When you log in to your MECU accounts, your account number (user ID) and password are secure.
The moment you click Go to my Accounts and before your account number (user ID) and password leave your computer, we encrypt them using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology. That means only MECU has access to this information.
Avoid Phishing Scams Phishing is a growing scam where criminals lure in their victims through spam emails, text messages or pop-up messages requesting personal and/or financial information. Learn about how you can protect yourself by visiting http://onguardonline.gov/index.html
Ways We Protect You:
128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Technology When you access your MECU accounts online, you must use a browser that supports 128-bit encryption, which is the strongest method of encryption available for use today. Firewalls The servers that run our site are protected by firewalls, which are systems that prevent unauthorized access to our networks. Our firewalls are monitored constantly to prevent security breaches. Timeouts Your online account session will automatically timeout, or end, if there's no activity for 15 minutes. You'll have to log on again to access your accounts after a timeout. Extra Security Not only will you have to enter your account number and password, but we have added another layer of enhanced security that includes a picture and passphrase. This enhanced security will ensure that you're logging on to your accounts at www.mecunet.org, not a 'spoofed' website.
Ways You Can Protect Yourself: Privacy - Avoid using easily guessed or learned information, such as your birthday or your spouse's name, for your online password, Visa check card PIN or Express Line PIN.
- Never give out personal information online or over the phone unless you have initiated the contact.
- Don't include information such as your driver's license or social security number on your pre-printed checks.
Safeguard Your Accounts - Store new and cancelled checks in a secure place and shred unnecessary financial documents.
- Consider signing up for a check safekeeping service.
- Avoid writing your account number on envelopes or other items that may be thrown away later.
Protect Your Cards - PIN Selection - Ensure the Personal Identification Number (PIN) you select is unique and not easily identifiable (e.g. birth date, phone number, etc.). If you own multiple cards, differentiate your PIN numbers across cards.
- Protect your PIN - Memorize all PINs, such as your ATM or debit card PIN and online passwords. Do not keep such numbers in your wallet or purse.
- Keep a record of card information - Keep a secure list of your card account and customer services numbers in case your cards are lost or stolen.
- Use secure sites when shopping online - If you are shopping online, don't provide your personal or financial information through a company's website until you have checked for indicators that the site is secure, like a lock icon on the browser's status bar or a website URL that begins "https:" (the "s" stands for "secure"). Unfortunately, no indicator is foolproof; some scammers have forged security icons.
- Check statements regularly - Monitor your card transaction activity on your bank statements. For added protection, monitor frequently online.
- Sign cards immediately - Upon receipt of your card, ensure that you sign the back signature panel.
- Report suspicious behavior quickly - To report suspicious card activity, or lost/stolen cards, please contact us at 847-576-5199, toll-free at 877-270-6392 or chat with us online using the button on the right.
Check Your Mail - If you stop receiving bills, statements or other monthly mailings, or if a bill is not received when expected, contact the issuing company immediately. This may be an indication that your mail is being intercepted.
- Promptly collect incoming mail, and use a locking mailbox if possible.
- Send outgoing mail from a secured mailbox or a post office; avoid leaving outgoing mail in your home mailbox.
- Shred all unwanted pre-approved offers for credit cards, convenience checks or loans.
If you believe you have received a suspicious or fraudulent email claiming to be from MECU, please forward these emails to abuse@mecunet.org.
